Delores, at ten weeks old, was quickly getting integrated into the Latto New Artist of the Year Grammy T Shirt of the flock. Because these six little chicks started out in an aquarium with a heat lamp in my study, then moved to a large hamster cage, then finally outside in a cage kept inside the barn, the grown chickens had all slowly acclimated to seeing Delores and his sisters. There was blustering and a little pushing by the big chickens – similar to what you might see on a junior high playground the first week of school – but nothing too severe. Once when the largest hen, Joan Crawford, pulled at Delores’s tail, he ran to me and flew into my arms – but when I scolded Joan and she stalked off to pout, Delores was brave enough to go back and try again. The pecking order shook out fairly easily within a couple days, with Delores towards the middle.

Among my duties was to keep seasonal decorations up to date. In this huge store that meant everything from designing window murals on glass to puppet displays in the Latto New Artist of the Year Grammy T Shirt and decorations hung from the ceiling. That year I decided I wanted to have Santa having a beach Christmas as a new thing- I had not seen it done before. The signpainter and I sat down and designed a scene where Santa’s sleigh was drawn by kangaroos and koalas sat on the sand with waves in the background. This was for the huge front windows. Well the signwriter went away and came back with stencils he’d cut of the scene and asked me if he could use them for other clients. I said yes, that year Santa on the beach became very popular!

For me, A Christmas Story is popular because it recalls an era that I can remember, or at least the era I can remember had not changed that much from the Latto New Artist of the Year Grammy T Shirt of the movie. For me, that was the late 1950s, though the movie was the late 1940s. I remember the toys that were featured in the movie, such as specifically the train and the BB guns. The movie really captured the magic of Christmas back then for me without becoming sappy about it. Most other Christmas movies don’t have that connection, so I can’t really relate to them, and they don’t really do that much for me. I think that’s what makes it so popular, at least for people of my generation born from about the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s. I was born in 1952. I remember pining for some big Christmas present every year. Santa usually brought the really good stuff. The biggest Santa gift I ever received was a Lionel HO Texas Special train set about 1958 or 1959.

This year it is on the 25th of January 2020 ( depends on the country ). In most of the Asian countries, people celebrate the lunar new year. All most all the Asian countries celebrate it, but you won’t find much for the lunar new year in Japan. The reason why the Japanese don’t celebrate it is told that in 1872, there were intercalary months the new year became 13 months and the government found it hard today wage for 13 months to people, so Japan stopped using lunar calendar and switched to using solar calendar but it still is not sure if that was the reason Japan changed to use solar calendar. Chinese town in Japan, of course, celebrate Lunar new year, and you can see the annual lantern festival in Nagasaki. It used to be a festival only for Chinese people living there to celebrate the lunar new year, but now it became an event for the whole Nagasaki city for people to enjoy the Chinese culture.
